Hey!
If you're in NYC, go check out the Rural Route Film Festival - July 29-31st, 2016. The 12th annual Rural Route Film Festival is centered around stories of brave youth and their animal friends. The line-up includes a mix of new movies and all-time classics, plus top notch shorts from around the globe. We're honored that DIVER screens with other short films as part of the The Opening Night Screening Party (July 29) at Brooklyn Grange rooftop farm (Flagship Long Island City, Queens location). The Core Festival (July 30-31) is at Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, NY. ![]() Hi Friends! Long time, no news. The good news is that I've been busy, the bad news is that I'm no good at keeping this website news section up-to-date. Thanks for reading. I'm happy to say I'm working with Christoph Gelfand (True Life Media) and photographer Tonee Harbert on a short high school basketball themed documentary. (It's about much more than that, more on that later!) We have been in production since Fall 2015, and expect to wrap up shooting in the next few months. This has been a fun one, with lots of community interest! We've been court-side, in the locker room, at team dinners, on the team bus, and in the school talking to players, coaches, parents and fans! If you'd like to follow the project on FB, please see PHS Basketball Film. It's looking like we'll be CROWDFUNDING this film, so stay tuned. Thanks! In November, Christoph and I were honored to be guests on Love Maine Radio with Dr. Lisa Belisle. During the interview, we chatted about our creative process, how we managed to make our short documentary film DIVER, and what inspires us. You can listen to our interview right here at Creative Duos #217
I was super honored to screen my film, Diver (co-produced w/ Christoph Gelfand) at the Camden International Film Festival and the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival this weekend! Keeping Maine films in Maine is always super nice and CIFF, Ben Fowlie, Sean Flynn and the entire CIFF gang always do a super job with the Festival. This year was no exception! At CIFF, I attended many of the Points North workshops, pitch sessions, and masterclasses along with so many talented filmmakers and industry folks. I attended a sweet live recording of (my favorite podcast) She Does Podcast, hosted by the amazing Elaine Sheldon (HOLLOW) and Sarah Ginsburg. Elaine and Sarah were joined by Shayla Harris (FRONTLINE), Sabaah Jordan (Co-Director, WHOSE STREETS) and Alex Hannibal (Tribeca Film Institute) to lead a roundtable conversation exploring the critically important topic of race and the media. I look forward to listening to the episode. Some other favorites at CIFF’s Points North were workshops with industry heroes like Andrea Meditch, David Teague, and Alex Gibney. The Points North live Pitch was incredible. So were the parties and mingling. We were also lucky enough to have our underwater cinematographer Heeth Grantham on hand at our screening on Sunday as part of the DIRIGO SHORTS program at the Farnsworth in Rockland, as well as our subject (and friend!) James Sewell and members of his family! It means a lot to have our friends and people in the movie at our screenings and Q&As. Our show had an overflow crowd so CIFF added another screening for 7pm at the STRAND in Rockland! Christoph headed to Newburyport on Saturday, while I held down the fort at Camden. We had a great screening and Q&A, and we are excited that DIVER won a Special Jury Commendation from Newburyport Documentary Film Festival! Thanks so much! We're honored. We hope to be at CIFF and Newburyport again next year! *Some of the Q&A and post-Q&A photos from CIFF are courtesy of the talented Alexandra Morrow. Super happy to announce that a new short documentary I co-produced with filmmaker and artist Christoph Gelfand (@truelifemedia) is in the NYTimes today - as part of the Op-Docs series! It is called Diving For Scallops. Be sure to check out the Op-Docs Series - there are some great short films very worth exploring. A longer version of our film will screening at some film festivals this Fall. So, stay tuned, y'all. ![]() Hello! In June, Kelly Rioux, Chris Byron and I debuted our documentary installation Home/Resilience at the Augusta Colonial Theater - it was really fun and really meaningful. Thanks to the SPACE GALLERY Kindling Fund for helping make it possible. And mostly, thanks to Ruth and Nona for letting us into their lives and sharing their wisdom. We love our friendship. Chris, Kelly and I are facilitating Oral History & Memory Portrait workshops for the residents of the Inn at City Hall this month (thanks to the City of Augusta for the $ funding to make this possible). We plan to have a show of the recorded oral histories and the memory portraits in the Fall/early winter. Also, I'm getting excited to show my new documentary film (created with my filmmaker pal Christoph Gelfand). We have some sweet upcoming announcements about where you will be able catch it - in Maine and beyond. So, please stay tuned in the coming weeks. Happy Summer. |
